Over the weekend of 4th and 5th August a field of 23 players entered the Club's biggest competition of the year, the Club Championship. Played over 36 holes, those seeking to make the cut for the final round on the Sunday needed to be within ten shots of the leader.
The most surprising casualty on Saturday was the 2009 Champion and 2011 runner-up, Mark Hinder, who never really got his game going and as a result failed to make the cut in very difficult conditions. But this big surprise was nothing compared to how events would unfold on the Sunday.

Coming down the 18th in the penultimate group, Fairwood Park stalwart Bert Grove knew that if he made par on the final hole he had a great chance of winning the one title that has always eluded him. Alas, Bert was to 4 putt on the 18th green and with that his chances of victory disappeared.
Playing together in the final group on the same score were Nick Couling and Simon Hardman, the ex 1st Team Captain playing against the current 1st Team Captain. Both made par on the final hole to finish 10 over and force a play-off hole, which was again on the 18th.
Incredibly, both players were to make par on this hole on another 3 successive occasions! Returning back to the 18th tee for the 4th time, the weather by now was pretty horrendous but it was Simon's better game management from tee to green that saw him make par while Nick bogeyed the hole.
Simon Hardman is therefore the 2012 Fairwood Park Club Champion, and it's the first time for many many years that the current 1st Team Captain has finished as the Club Champion!
