Hello and welcome to my first blog issue on the Fairwood Park web site. In this and forthcoming blogs, I will endeavour to bring you the very latest news from the world of golf at our Club, along with information on any seasonal promotions we may have through the Proshop.
Taking advantage of what is traditionally a quiet time for me during the Club's annual maintenance week, I recently took the family for a short stay to Disneyland Paris, before venturing down south to a place called Dax, which is about 30 minutes from the surfing haven of Biarritz. Lloyd was in his element here and it was certainly a toss up as to which part of his holidays he enjoyed the most! My sincere thanks to one of our newer members, John 'Wally' Carey and his wife for putting us up in their fantastic appartment. If any members are interested in playing golf and or just staying in this beautiful part of the world, have a word with 'Wally' and he'll do you a deal too good to ignore!
Looking at the recent standings, did you know that if the teams were to be selected today, that Tom Watson
would be teeing it up at Ryder Cup 2010
next October? I for one sincerely hope this great golfer and gentleman of the game is still going to be involved 12 months from now.
With 2 Ryder Cup tickets up for grabs this months shotgun start sponsored by TENOVUS. The glorious Autumn day that saw temperatures almost hit 20C was mirrored only by the hot scoring of many of our members. saw a full compliment of 40 teams take part. Indeed upwards of 42 points was not uncommon, and when I recieved Mike Honey and Chris Ellis's card totalling 45 points, I thought Mike's search for tickets was going to recieve a welcome boost! So it was a surprise to everyone at the packed presentation when indeed the lads were pipped into second place by the International duo of Domonik Higgins and Paul Smith!
Upon recieving his prize, the wisecracking London born Nick chirped, " Oh, I can't believe it! Smithy hasn't played for 2 months and we were not down to play until 24 hours to go -amazing. I have to say the golf course looked and played magnificently in the sunshine. When its like this why would you want to play anywhere else? Paul's short game was excellent and even I was chipping the ball stone dead when it mattered"!
Well done guys, I'll look forward to seeing you at the Celtic this time next year- let's hope and pray we get the same Autumn weather next year as this- to show Wales in it's best light too!!!
The previous week we held another new Club event which we are looking to stage in the future on an annual basis. Local car dealers FRF MOTORS sponsored the Saturday Stableford on the 4th October, and our sincere thanks go out to them for donating £150 in prize money.
Despite the poor weather conditions on the day, a very healthy field battled through high winds and heavy rain which saw Steve Sleeman slip into 1st Place with a remarkable return of 40 points.
The days Top 3 were:-
1. Steve Sleeman £50 proshop voucher
2. Mike Davey £30 proshop voucher
3. Bert Grove £20 proshop voucher
Also Nearest the Pin winners recieving £12.50 voucher each were:-
Brian Young, Steve Clarke + Malcolm Eley
The days longest drive was also won by Brian Young.
This weekend sees the return of the Mens Winter League Pairs Competition. In total 45 teams have entered, just 5 short of last years numbers. Defending the title they won so well last campaign will see Hugh Quick+Steve James open up against Steve 'OZ' Owens and newcomer, Dafydd Morris. The latter may prove to be a surprise package this year one thinks.
Again I have been lumbered with Mushy. As my playing partner, one only hopes he can improve on his attendance figures of last campaign, where due to over zealous partying the night before matches he played in only 3 games!!!
There are 5 leagues of 9 teams, meaning everybody will play 8 games. After the league format there will be 2 Cup knockout competitions for the best 16 teams. The Finals of the Cup(Champions League) and the Plate (UEFA Cup) will be played before 31st March 2010. The pairs competition will take place every 2nd Sunday from the 18th October to the 13th December. A point to note is that the last game of 2009 will be played a week later, the 20th December.
We're hoping that this years Christmas edition will be as much fun as last year when I have to say Bert Grove's Karaoke performance
of Rod Stuarts 'Sailing' was something those there will never forget! By the way I think I'm right in saying you can still see many other 'performances' from the same night on YouTube..
One final word on Winter League before I go, if anybody would like to play the occasional match on a Sunday and sample the unique atmosphere of Winter League, please put your names up on the 'Subs List' which is in the mens locker room. More on this seasons Winter League Pairs to follow in next months blog.
